Family photo styling
Styling for family photos doesn’t have to be some big complicated ordeal!
I have a very simple and straightforward method to have stunning coordinated attire for family photos, without straying from your own style or having to go out and buy all new clothes. I recommend that mum pick out something first. Something that she feels absolutely amazing in. This could be a dress, a shirt and pants, overalls, or really anything at all that makes you feel good. The next step is to look at the colours and textures in the outfit that you’ve chosen and pull pieces of that for the rest of your family. The goal isn’t matching everyone to the exact same colour and shade. Exact matching can make the photos flat and lack dimension, you want to coordinate but not look like you bought the same shirt in everyone’s size.
Lets do a few different examples for you here. Lets say you have a family of 5, mum, dad, 6 year old boy, 4 year old girl and an 8 month old baby girl. We choose mums outfit first. Mum chooses a dark brown dress, since its one solid colour we want to pull in two other colours to add variety and interest. Lets choose baby girls outfit next to get that colour in. For baby girl we have a cream dress with a light blue detail. With mums dark brown dress now we have 3 colours, but nothing to tie them together. If we give baby girl a dark brown hair bow, now she ties in with what mum is wearing. Lets then give big brother a pair of dark brown pants and a light blue button up shirt, middle sister gets a light blue dress with cream hair ribbons and dad gets cream pants with a dark brown button up shirt. Now everyone has a similar colour pallet without having to wear the exact same thing.
In the above scenario baby girls outfit acts as the “anchor” she is wearing all three of the colours. Anyone in your family can have the “anchor” outfit. This example is more formal but your family photos can be as formal or as casual as you want them to be.
Lets do another example. You have a family of 3 mum, dad, and baby boy. Mums outfit is going to be the “Anchor” in this example. She wears a patterned skirt and a solid green top. When one person has a pattern or very colourful piece this gives you a lot of options for the other people.
